Robyn with cousins Anita and Jackie and Aunt Nora California Black Women's Health Project Policy Meeting, Sacramento California, February 2006

Robyn is HUNGRY to speak her mind!

What do you see as the worst problem facing the black community?

The public schools are failing our children, our families and our communities-no question.

I believe the classroom setting is obsolete. My friends who work in education tell me there is little control of kids who are stuck in the classroom all day, that kids are restless and disrespectful. I think once kids hit high school, there should no more classes, just on the job training. I believe all children are talented and given the opportunity to express those God-given skills they can be successful in life.

What about the so-called breakdown of the black family?

I think the stats that show that only one- third of black women are married are somewhat misleading. Numerous women live in committed relationships with devoted partners. There are many, many, fantastic stepfathers who raise other people's children with love and dedication. These men should be congratulated and encouraged. Yet, they are not counted in the marriage statistics. We have a vision of the evil, wicked stepfather or stepmother and those people are the exceptions not the rule. Grandmothers and grandfathers, increasingly are responsible for raising kids, too.

If you could wave a magic wand, what one change in the world would you make?

For Allen Iverson to win an NBA championship? Just kidding. No I am serious. Beyond that...

At this point in American history, I would like to see us out of Iraq as soon as possible and work more diligently on cars that are powered with alternative fuels.

I would also like to see the abolishment of racism, which is alive and well in America, even if it is undercover and dress up in a suit and tie.
